Joe Strummer, The Clash. 1966 Fender Telecaster electric guitar.
This guitar was owned by legendary musician Joe Strummer from punk rock band, The Clash.
Strummer joined The Clash in May of 1976. Deciding that The Clash needed a look similar to the Sex Pistols, the band designed clothing with statements stencilled on them. The Clash’s manager, Bernie Rhodes, arranged for the band to take its instruments to an auto body shop where everything, including Strummer’s Fender Telecaster, was painted and stencilled.
By the end of 1976, Strummer’s guitar body, including the pick guard, had an extra coating of grey primer and black automobile paint. Strummer had also added the ‘IGNORE ALIEN ORDERS’ sticker. The guitar remained in this condition during the recording of ‘The Clash’ album and the band’s participation in the Sex Pistols’ ill-fated ‘Anarchy’ UK tour in November/December 1976.
By the time The Clash released Give ‘Em Enough Rope in 1978, the band toured extensively and Strummer modified his Telecaster by painting a large question mark on the back in white spray paint and adding various stickers behind the bridge.
The Clash eventually broke up in 1985. Strummer added the ‘TRASH CITY’ sticker to his Telecaster in 1988, after the release of his soundtrack for the movie Walker.
Strummer died suddenly in December 2002 of a congenital heart defect at the age of 50. During his second to last show, Strummer was joined on stage by Mick Jones for the first time in nearly 20 years, fuelling rumours of a Clash reunion when the band was to be inducted into The Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame in March 2003. Sadly, the reunion was not to be.
